June Medical Services, LLC v. Russo

On this episode, Chris is joined by Teresa Collett, a law professor and director of the Prolife Center at the University of St. Thomas School of Law. Professor Collett unpacks the pro-life Louisiana statute at stake in the June Medical decision, which was designed to ensure all women receive high-quality emergency medical care by requiring abortionists to obtain hospital admitting privileges. While Justice Roberts didn’t undo Roe v. Wade to the disappointment of many, there is a silver lining to the case that has led to positive developments in the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, which covers the Dakotas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, and Arkansas.

Show notes: At the end of the interview, Prof. Collett mentions the prudence needed in politics, and the need to take small steps to advance the pro-life cause, especially when it’s not immediately feasible to introduce completely pro-life laws everywhere. For more on this principle in the context of pro-life lawmaking, see St. John Paul II’s encyclical Evangelium Vitae, nos. 73-75.
